Our Story
1955
Adrien Laflamme, a cobbler by profession, set up Laflamme Tarpaulins, which specialized, among other things, in the darning ans waterproofing of tarpaulins.
The company closed its doors during the winter period. Laflamme Tarpaulins made tarps to cover the asbestos bags stored outside.
When the time came to ship them, they tore the canvases with loaders which often damages the canvases.
1963
Jacques Laflamme was only 19 years old when he took over from his father who was aspiring to retire but who died in a work accident during the winter period on a construction site in the Montreal metro.
1975
The Unicanvas company is born and is formed by the owners of Bonair and Laflamme Tarpaulins.
The founding members are Jacques Laflamme, Real Leclerc, Lionel Gosselin, Claude Grondin and Arnold Kostiner.
Unicanvas rented the premises used by Laflamme Tarpaulins and had the sole purpose of manufacturing canvas for Bonair trailer tents.
1976
Unicanvas acquired the rented premises and proceeded with an expansion of the company, beginning the manufacture of portable canvas garages, awnings and kitchenettes for tent trailers.
The company thus monopolize a significant after-sales service market for tent trailers by offering an entirely new line of awnings and kitchenettes.
1978
The reputation for quality of the products was growing with customers and the Carefree company located in Colorado decided to partner with Unicanvas for the manufacture of automatic roller awnings.
Unicanvas was responsible for manufacturing the Carefree awnings distributed across Canada.
1982
As the demand for kitchenettes grew, Unicanvas began manufacturing kitchenettes for travel trailers, which was a very important market, mainly in Quebec and Ontario.
1984
Unicanvas is so successful in distributing its products that the Carefree company offers it not only the manufacture of its automatic awnings but also the distribution of its products for the province of Quebec.
At the same time, Unicanvas begins manufacturing window curtains for Bonair trailers.
This manufacturing sector becomes more important when Bonair launches its complete line of 24’ to 32’ travel trailers.
1985
Unicanvas obtains the distribution of its complete products across Canada.
1986
Unicanvas decided, while consolidating its position as an awning distributor for Canada, to manufacture travel trailer kitchenettes that are adaptable to all brands of trailers distributing the product directly to dealers.
